Ionic Apps Make the World Better
One of the best things about being an open source software company is hearing inspiring stories about the Ionic apps that students, individual developers, and nonprofit organizations create to make a positive difference in the world. We can all use a few more of those stories, right?
Addressing food insecurity on campus
Columbia University undergrads Helson Taveras, Julio Henriquez, Annie Zhang, and Kunal Kamath built the Ionic app Swipes to address food insecurity on campus.
“I chose Ionic because I didn’t want to have to make the choice of excluding any particular mobile demographic on campus,” said Taveras. “Having everyone being able to participate in Swipes is critical to our success.”
Tracking carbon savings to help the environment
University of Wisconsin-Madison students John Meurer and Victor Tavares created the MyEarth app, which allows users to track their carbon savings, for a sustainability-focused independent project assigned by Professor Suman Banerjee. Meurer completed the app with graduate student Andy Stevens, from Professor Nancy Wong’s research group, and presented the app at the Nelson Institute’s Earth Day Conference in 2015. Time Magazine covered the app as a must-have.
Educating health care workers about Ebola
Developer Jean Pokou built the Ebola Surveyor app for the IT firm Ivocarte Abyshop as a tool for government health care workers to teach and warn residents of the Ivory Coast in West Africa about Ebola.
“Ebola Surveyor helped the health care workers to stop Ebola from crossing the Ivory Coast Border,” says Pokou. “Ionic was the right tool for me, because it let me apply everything I was learning at the time about Angular and Cordova. I completed the application in two weeks because of the well-structured Ionic documentation and the forum.”
Pokou’s code is available on GitHub, and he also created a Facebook page for the app.
Providing refugees with information about a new country
Developer Mattias Baumgart is working on a nonprofit project, the Welcome App Concept, run by Saxonia Systems AG and HeiReS GmbH, which provides general information about available resources to refugees seeking asylum in Germany. The iOS and Android versions of the app are available in English, German, and Arabic. The Windows version was built natively, and the website is in German.
Helping individuals take action on digital rights issues
The Electronic Frontier Foundation built its first mobile app, to connect users to the EFF Action Center, with Ionic. The code is available on GitHub.
Making it easy to record meaningful conversations
StoryCorps used Ionic to develop their app, which allows users to record conversations they’ve had with loved ones or people with whom they’ve shared a profound moment, in order to create an international archive of stories to preserve for future generations.
